About Silver sulfadiazine
Silver sulfadiazine is a topical sulfonamide antibacterial compound. Its mechanism involves the gradual release of silver ions that bind to microbial DNA and cellular proteins, alongside the competitive inhibition of para-aminobenzoic acid by the sulfadiazine moiety. Developed in the 1960s, it is recognised on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines and detailed in the major pharmacopoeias. It is globally formulated as a one percent topical cream.
