About Clotrimazole
Clotrimazole is a synthetic imidazole derivative with broad-spectrum mycological activity. The compound functions by inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme 14-alpha-demethylase, thereby depleting ergosterol synthesis; this disrupts the structural integrity and function of the fungal cytoplasmic membrane, leading to increased permeability. Discovered in the late 1960s, the substance is included on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines and holds monographs in the Ph. Eur., BP, and USP. It is universally formulated as topical creams, vaginal pessaries, dusting powders, and topical solutions.
