About Hydrocortisone
Hydrocortisone is a naturally occurring glucocorticoid hormone synthesised by the adrenal cortex and replicated chemically for medical formulations. Entering cells via passive diffusion, it binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors; this complex translocates to the nucleus to modulate gene transcription, thereby suppressing the synthesis of inflammatory mediators. Established in the mid-20th century, the substance is featured on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines and in major pharmacopoeias. It is internationally available in topical creams, oral tablets, rectal foams, and intravenous preparations.
